What is Project-based learning (PBL)?

What is Project-based learning (PBL)?

It is a way of teaching where students create a strong foundation of academic concepts while working on real-world problems. These projects encourage hands-on learning, collaboration, and critical thinking along with social-emotional learning instead of just memorising facts.

Students work on these projects over an extended period, giving them time to connect deeper and understand the subject's relevance. This journey allows them to make choices to take control of their learning at different intervals, for example, they can choose to deliver their presentation in their style and interests, an interactive game, a piece of art, a creative story or even a podcast.

Why does PBL deserve a chance?

It allows the learners to:

  1. Think critically

  2. Foster teamwork

  3. Promote Self-learning

  4. Communicate effectively

  5. Self-reflect and improve

It allows the facilitators (teachers) to:

  1. Improve assessment formats

  2. Encourage diverse personalities

  3. Be creative with project development

  4. Emotionally connect with learners

The Tapas Assessment Program and its integration with Problem-based learning (PBL) are carefully designed for different grades. The learners are assessed both on academic goals and personal growth. Here’s an overall outline across grades:

We don’t do report cards, we do learning ledgers.

Peer and Self-Assessments

Learners engage in peer reviews and self-assessments to reflect on their contributions to group projects, collaboration and communication skills.

Facilitators Assessment (Formative)

One-on-one check-ins with learners help facilitators provide ongoing feedback at different stages of project to help them adjust and improve.

Portfolio

Learners maintain portfolios to document their work at every stage song with its reflection.

Rubrics and Checklists

Rubrics at varying levels are used to outline criteria for success, tailored to different grade levels and aligned with Cambridge standards. Learners use them to assess their progress and align their work with project goals.

Summative Assessment (Final Product)

The final project is evaluated based on factors like research quality, creativity and presentation. It measures learner’s understanding and ability to apply what they’ve learned over the project.

Competency Badges

A way to recognise learner’s expertise at different levels is by awarding badges for leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving and more.

Project-based learning mirrors life scenarios, you could even call it a DRY RUN for real life.
