What Things Should Parents Consider While Selecting A School?

Education is the foundation of a child’s life, and the building block of this foundation is the school with the correct pedagogy. Children spend between 6-8 hours a day at school. Hence, parents must find a school that suits their needs and understanding.

But how do you know which kind of school to choose? Recently, we have seen a series of schools spring up with different pedagogical themes. So what is the school that fits your needs and your child’s besides making them strive to do better?

Consider These Points Before You Make The Choice:

Preparing Students for the Future Through the Present

Tapas Education school

Learning in most schools is not traditional anymore. Most schools adopt progressive learning, like Tapas School, an IGCSE-affiliated school in Bangalore. A progressive education institution is not only about theoretical knowledge but also practical application of that knowledge. This ensures better inculcation and fosters their intellectual development. Additionally, a school should have co-curricular activities to enhance academic performance. Then, the essential skills of the future and the child’s holistic growth are fuelled. It is well-known that creative activities give a child an edge over others. Hence, it is important that you choose open learning spaces and good, airy classrooms that support academic learning and extracurricular activities. Such schools propel your child’s leadership skills and interest in ethics, showing improved social and personal development results. This also ingrains development, resourcefulness, and responsibility.

The Curriculum

This is a major point for parents to consider as it has a big role in shaping a child’s mind towards his studies and future career. Beyond establishing common goals for students and teachers, the curriculum also establishes uniform learning goals for the whole school and lays out a clear path for children to go from one grade to the next. At Tapas School, curriculum development takes place concurrently with the development of assessment standards. The assessments ensure that students are evaluated on understanding rather than memorizing a subject. New evaluation methods and alternative credentialing made possible by Tapas now provide students, parents, and teachers with the knowledge they need to plan for future experiences.

Learning From the Environment

According to research, learning environments are extremely important for student success. Several factors can impact learning ability, such as seating, noise, light, or even color. Positive learning environments have increased students’ motivation, engagement, and general learning ability. On the other side, it will be far more challenging for students to gain knowledge and maintain their attention in poor learning environments, such as unpleasant, noisy, or full of distractions. Because of this, Tapas School is committed to creating a pleasant and engaging learning environment.

You should shortlist a school that has a positive learning environment and teachers that are supportive. Prioritize identifying a space that boosts their growth and fosters their development. This benefits the child in the cultivation of best habits, values, and practices. Children have significant growth and they flourish when they feel safe and appreciated, hence, it is important to find that environment for them. Look at the safety measures a school takes in terms of bullying, punishment, harassment, etc. The children must feel protected and the school must have the student’s well-being as its top priority. A school should also be equipped with modern infrastructure keeping the student’s highest development in mind. At Tapas School, we have Masterclasses in which they get the chance to practically learn and flourish. From gardening to designing a tiny electronic car or even learning about different cultures’ heritage music, we have all sorts of real-world learning for children to explore and grow.

The child’s mind will be stimulated by uniquely designed educational contexts like Masterclasses that are well-equipped. If a school inspires you, it is the right one for your child!

An Educationist leads Management

Educationist leads Management

If you want a school that makes your child a successful adult, choose one with a leader at this institution’s helm. Most significantly, the person in charge should have an academic background and preferably be an educationist; in our case, this is true. Tapas School is led by someone who is qualified and trained to empower, inspire and help improve the performance of the student, and their learning practices.

They should be able to put processes in place and have a progressive outlook. Wielding influence, they should be able to lead by example and should animate teachers and students alike. The person in this position should also gauge how to create a viable ambiance that is encouraging and positive, and also have a vision for the academic success of the school.

With our board of advisors, Dr. MK Sridhar, Jayanti Tambe, Dr. Tirka Widanti, Caroline Essame, Naresh Purushottam, and Amrita Burman, the school is perfectly managed!

Skill Development in Schools

Students learn to think beyond grades, thanks to the process of skill development. It assists individuals in discovering their potential, acquiring practical skills, and putting themselves in a position to succeed in the professions of their choice. As a result, youths get a higher chance of employability, which is improved via skill-based learning. Additionally, it strengthens a country’s infrastructure and encourages economic expansion.

Ultimately, it fosters leadership qualities in kids while assisting them in being more altruistic. It also assists students in developing problem-solving approaches and excellent communication skills. In addition, they discover how to utilise their abilities to lead and motivate their teams, which helps them develop the leadership skills they will need in the real world.

Competent and Experienced Teachers

To have a complete learning experience, it is crucial that your child has professional and well-trained teachers as mentors. To make sure that the child is spending time fruitfully at school, whether it may be through studies or extracurricular activities, the teacher should have the right outlook and behavioral skills. The teachers are the mentors that can steer the child and help mold them into the best version of themselves. It is okay to ask for the credentials, reputation, and academic achievements of the teacher because they are the ones teaching your child. Choose a school that has qualified teachers with a good student-teacher ratio. This ensures that they get personalized attention and that their own uniqueness is enhanced and flourishes.

Technology-Enhanced Learning Experiences

In the internet age, it is imperative that every school has the finest technology that is woven into its curriculum. Teaching methods and learning should both have state-of-the-art facilities in technology. If a school prioritizes technology along with learning and development and makes it a mission to deliver good education via multimedia as well as books and practical knowledge, then you must opt for such a school. Interactive content and gamified learning are the digital resources that help keep children engaged and foster their imagination and creativity. Not to forget that online learning has become as much a part of education as real-time learning worldwide due to the pandemic. Schools adept in technology give great results and must make the cut.

Conclusion

Always remember that a system that meets the above criterion and is willingly crafted to improve and move with the times continuously and effortlessly is the school to choose. Many international schools follow this pedagogy, and there are project-based learning schools in Bangalore, like Tapas School, that follow the same. Moreover, properly set protocols that ensure regular educational reforms make the learning process effective and relevant. But of course, besides these factors, parents must look at the mode of transportation, location, or proximity to the residence to suit their convenience.

How to choose the right school board for your child?

The world is marching rapidly toward globalization so how can education be left behind? In fact, it is leading the modernisation brigade. The pressure is on the parents to furnish their children with skills that are recognised globally, preparing them for a future anywhere.

In India, choices in educational streams or schooling systems have moved to newer ways of schooling, and adding to that, are the new boards that have trooped in from across the globe. Different education boards make it so much easier for modern parents to decide and shape their child’s futures.

Primarily, there are a handful of boards in India, and they all maintain different methods of teaching, learning programs, syllabuses, requirements for the curriculum, criteria for assessments, processes for tests, etc. All of these are contributing factors to the development of the students in a prepared and thorough manner.

Categories of School boards

There are a few main categories of boards which are listed below. Prominently, these are the ones that are most popular with parents nowadays.

  • CBSE – Central Board of Secondary Education.
  • CISCE – Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations.
  • NIOS – National Institute of Open Schooling.
  • IB – International Baccalaureate.
  • CIE – Cambridge International Education.
  • IGCSE – International General Certificate of Secondary Education.

Because India has a huge population and one of the largest education systems in the world, there is a place for everyone and there are choices for every stratum of the society with different mindsets and skill sets kept in mind.

Having a host of boards to choose from, is a rather difficult choice. An uphill task to make a choice based on the pros and cons, this can be very difficult. But a few pointers can help find the right direction, although the decision has to be made independently as it’s a better portion of a student’s childhood that is in question and the shaping of which is inherently very important. Each board has differentiated learning strategies integrated with the set curriculum to bring out the best results.

CBSE is like the brand ambassador of the Indian Education system. Most schools opt for it as the board they offer. They offer a structured curriculum with well-defined subjects. Their focus is knowledge application and skill-based learning. Typically, they have 6 main subjects and one vocational subject. With a host of extracurricular activities, they not only focus on education but also on preparing the children for the future with confidence. Their exams are fairly easy compared to the other boards, their teaching pedagogy is also straightforward.

ICSE on the other hand is a more difficult board and it was a fact right up until IB took over that baton. ICSE always focused on curriculum and high-level learning and excelling has always been their priority. They have a rigid structure in terms of subjects with little or no choice. While they encourage co-curricular activities, the only thing that is out of the ordinary is that there is again no choice and a child has to have a skill set. This system is high on rote learning but over the years they have outshone the other boards.

IB is a pioneer in the education system globally. Considered prestigious in India, they are a rather expensive choice for a big chunk of society. They have a curriculum that is designed based on the topic and subject. The pedagogy is immersive learning at its best. It doesn’t support the textbook learning methods as most of their subjects are integrated into one another. Since these are expensive schools, they also have fantastic infrastructure that allows them to have many interesting extracurricular activities that many schools may not be able to. The most demanding curriculum and teaching pedagogy, IB has a continuous assessment system rather than terms and exams.

IGCSE on the other hand is one of the most popular schooling systems for modern parents due to the Cambridge International education it imparts. It is also one of the largest education systems in the world. The students that pass out from here are accepted in universities worldwide, namely the UK, USA, Canada, Middle Eastern countries, Europe, Asia, etc. making it the most viable option there is. The Cambridge syllabus starts from primary, lower secondary, upper secondary, to advanced level and this is called ‘ The Cambridge Pathway.’

Conclusion

India has adapted to this board easier than others as it prepares the students for life. There are many IGCSE-affiliated schools in Bangalore, one of which is Tapas Education. An international school in Bangalore with gurukul interspersed with differentiated learning strategies. Although they follow the Cambridge syllabus, they also customize learning programs. The admissions are open for next year (2023-24). Check the website https://tapaseducation.com/ out for more information.
